Go to Umi to be pampered in one of the most exclusive restaurants in Bangkok. One master sushi chef and 3 assistants attend to only 8 seats arranged around the chef. (There are two rooms, each with 8 chairs around the sushi chef.) There is no menu. You make your reservation and for two hours you are served whatever high quality sushi the chef decides to feed you. This is a traditional style of sushi restaurant where you trust the expertise of the chef to provide a good experience. The chef chooses your meal in part based on the best fish he was able to buy at the market that day. Dinner with appetizers was plenty of food. I left full but with room for desert. Wait staff was very attentive, constantly arranging and cleaning the table to perfection and refilling tea. Wasabi is freshly grated and milder than the bottled version. The pickled ginger is also made in-house, it is mild, spicy, and slightly sweet. They use both white and brown rice. Ask for sashimi the option if you don’t want rice, they’ll make a plate for you containing the same fish. The chef’s English is limited but sufficient to understand what you are eating. To supplement English they use an iPad with photos and descriptions of the fish. The appetizers and dinner consisted of (in order of photos): Eggplant. Okinawan seaweed. Sweet shrimp - chopped- with uni. Served layered, you mix it before eating. Crabmeat. Abalone over chopped abalone liver with rice. Monkfish liver (very mildly fishy) “Fish testicules” tasted mild and fishy. They don’t tell you what it is until after you have eaten it. At this point they started showing photos on iPad for fish name. Cuttlefish was mild and delicate. Kinmedai w crunchy skin, interesting texture. Horse mackerel was not greasy like mackerel often is. Tuna. Tuna belly (toro) was good but not as fatty as I was expecting. Kohada fish. Redfish. Tiger prawn with brown rice. Salmon roe over uni over brown rice. Eel over white rice. Sweet omelet (had a cake-like texture). Tuna roll nigiri. Seaweed was crispy and easily separated when bitten. (Not tough like nigiri often is.) Charcoal ice cream to settle the stomach. Three meals are served per day: Lunch from noon to 2:00 PM Dinner at 6 Dinner at 8:15 PM. The woman answering the phone for reservations does not speak English very well. I was left unsure if I actually had a reservation. She called the morning of the reservation to confirm. You must have money to burn. 6,800 baht per person for appetizers with dinner. 4,000 baht per person for dinner only Located in Gaysorn Village one floor below the BTS level. Far left corner of the building behind a non-descript white wall. The only sign of the restaurant within is a wooden block on the wall inscribed “Umi.”
One of the most Incredibly amazing experience in BKK. Wanted to visit Omakasen cuisine in BKK badly, as the CP value is very high. Due to the bad weather, we planned to find somewhere very near the hotel, and we were fortunate enough to find this place. Foods were amazing, and the chef was surprisingly professional (he is a Thai but spoken fluent Japanese). Highly recommended this place of you are craving for Omakasen like us
Tip top freshness in the produce. The Yuzu Tako with Monkfish Liver was the special one. Sushi dishes. Excellent and attentive service. The pictures tells a thousand words. It was a very satisfying dinner.
One of the most popular edomae omakase in bangkok! Quality is very consistent- recommend to visit at Chef Phot’s counter
Probably one of the best omagase I have had. It’s the authentic sushi that I like, nothing to fancy, simple buy tasteful. The young ginger that is the side dish is also very delicious which add to my favorite points. We requested Chef Poj and he serves really well. This course is 3,800+VAT, total of 16 courses with soup and dessert. Already full and very satisfied. The restaurant is in Gaysorn village, so, there’s easy parking.
I have experiences with 18 serves omakase course with UMI restaurant ! Especially Anago, Uni, and Kuruma Ebi !!!!! If you guys are looking for Japanese restaurant nearby Siam, let come to try Enjoyed
Good sushi in bangkok! Had a great business meeting and sushi done pretty well
i was looking forward from singapore, to have sushi at this place. Japanese food lover here by the way… this is definitely the pride of japan. Solid stuff that I don’t even have to rate. You don’t even have to rate it when it’s and all you have to do is close your eyes and enjoy the orgasm in your mouth. Oishi. Keep it up!
