10/25 - In town as part of our NE bus trip. Arrived around 4:00 on a Saturday & Benjamin's was the only place we could find that would take a reservation for 9. We went up the stairs to find a wonderful place, great atmosphere, attentive staff, reasonable prices . The wife & I split the stuffed rock sole & a crab cake, both were very good and more than enough food. In fact, there wasn't anyone in our group that finished their whole meal. Beer selection was a little limited outside of the usual suspects. The place got to be full of people and so did the noise level, but don't let that keep you from eating here.
A very pleasant experience: I had the Seafood Linguini in a wine/garlic broth. It was a large bowl of linguini with quite a lot of very tasty garlicky broth, some large scallops, large shrimp, mussels, clams, calamari, and large chunks of fish, all perfectly cooked. My wife had the Berry Salad, which is a good sized salad garnished with strawberries and blueberries, and topped with roasted shrimp and half a small lobster. Again, perfectly prepared.
This place is a hidden gem in Newport! The food is always fresh, delicious, great quality, and so reasonably priced compared to other restaurants around the area. Did I mention the daily buck a shuck from 12-2 for a $1.50 and all day half off apps and buck a shuck oysters and little necks on Tuesdays? They have everything from on the menu from land to sea!
Went for lunch and, with no wait at all, we got a cozy table by the front window, with a heat vent under the bench seat. We sat in the bar downstairs, now realizing there was a dining area upstairs, until we went up to use the restroom. We ordered a salmon BLT and a lobster grilled cheese, both of which were delicious! Service with great, staff were friendly. Will absolutely go back.
This is officially my favorite spot in Newport. I love that it is budget friendly while getting the scenic views of Thames street. Their lobster quesadilla is to die for, it’s very cheese and they did not hold back on the meat. I ordered a lobster roll and my husband ordered the rock sol. It was filled with crab me and so creamy. We ordered the island punch and it was the perfect kick. Definitely a must to try.
In Newport for a night and wanted to try an authentic lobster roll and clam chowder while I’m here. Looked around Google Maps and happened upon a few in the area but decided on Benjamin’s because it looked reasonable. There are two entrances. The street level pub/bar and a quieter restaurant setting up the stairs. I opted for the quieter setting. Very cozy and inviting. Was greeted immediately by the friendly staff. Ordered the New England Clam Chowder and hot Lobster Roll. The chowder was delicious. I was surprised by the tangy taste. The lobster roll was stuffed to the gills in its toasted roll. YUM!! I wished it had a more buttery taste to it but still delicious. Fries and a huge amount of Cole slaw accompanies the roll. Nice friendly staff and lovely ambience. Glad I found this place. I’d come back if I’m ever in Newport again.
Bartender was awesome! Oysters and chowder French fries were phenomenal. Going back today before we head home.
The oysters are freaking delicious — huge, fresh, and full of flavor! You can tell they take pride in their seafood. I even saw plenty of Grand Marnier behind the bar for anyone who likes a good drink. The bartender shucked my oysters and clams perfectly. Great service and atmosphere — I’ll definitely be back!
