The Black Sheep is one of our favorite spots in Halifax. Awesome location, nice vibes, and a cozy yet slightly upscale atmosphere that feels special but still relaxed. The service was friendly, fast, and very efficient both times we visited. The food was excellent with generous portions. The chowder was so good we had it twice — the sauce was incredible, rich, and full of flavor. We even asked for focaccia just to soak it up. The fish cake was outstanding, with a nice smoky touch, and the trout bagel was fresh and perfectly balanced. The lobster ravioli was another highlight — plenty of lobster, creamy and generous. The only downside was the haddock and chips; the crust and fries were a bit too greasy, though the fish itself was juicy and well-cooked. Still, everything else made up for it. They also have a great local beer selection, including Keith’s from next door. Prices are fair for the quality and portions — a bit on the higher side but absolutely worth it. We enjoyed it so much we came back the very next day. Highly recommended.
Incredible restaurant in Downtown Halifax. The tomato toast had the freshest and sweetest tomatoes. My friend had the lobster roll, which was amazing. As well, so was the lobster pasta. I had the shrimp ceviche, which was so flavourful. We will be coming back!
I visited The Black Sheep restaurant at its new location on Lower Water st. today and it did not disappoint. Having visited the Dresden location in the past, I will say it has even gotten better. Despite the trout benedict being sold out, I ordered the pastrami benedict, eggs were cooked perfectly and the in house smoke flavour on the pastrami was delicious. We also ordered the fish cakes with poached eggs and it was also really delicious and had excellent seasoning. Capri, our server gave great suggestions for other great eats & drinks in Halifax and was very friendly. Loved this spot!
I loved the place but for gods name please do not call your shrimp lemon dish ceviche , it has nothing in common with real ceviche. Perrogies were good and shrimp tacos were alright. Vibes are amazing , dark theme and chill music was a hit , I will be definitely back for some drinks. God bless
The meals had a different unique twist to them and really enjoyed the homemade condiments and admiring all of the breads as well. Caesar has a great kick with all the right ingredients and garnishes. We came on a weekend and it seemed to be less busy but the brunch food was quite a long wait. If you can allow extra time and don’t arrive too hungry, it’s worth the wait. Had the ceviche as an appetizer and it was tasty. We were too hungry by the time the main food came and forgot to take pictures but the diner breakfast is excellent and a good portion, the brisket Benny is also very good and the meat is high quality. Loved that would could have a side salad with the meal instead of starches. The server was accommodating with the personalized requests and it was a bonus to have a weekend farmers market right outside the entrance.
Sometimes the best experiences happen by accident. We arrived in to Halifax late on a Saturday, having just flown in from the USA. We were desperate to find a good meal at 9:30 pm. The restaurant in our hotel was hosting a private event so we walked in to Black Sheep, pleased to find they were still open. We were greeted by a very welcoming host, who was also our waiter. Due to the late hour, there was only one other table occupied by guests. We were reassured that we still had time for dinner. The meal turned out be far better than we could have ever anticipated. We shared a dozen fresh oysters that were some of the best I have ever eaten. For the main course we enjoyed the ramen and some sautéed mussels. Again, both phenomenal. The Tatamagouche IPA we paired with our meal was excellent. The waiter made us feel welcome and was so personable, even though the restaurant was winding down for the evening. The ambience of the restaurant made the meal that much better. What an amazing interior design with soft lighting on exposed brick walls and high ceilings. Thanks for making our arrival to Nova Scotia so memorable. I wish I had more photos besides my beer. When the food began to arrive at the table I could think of nothing else but enjoying it. This has to be one of the best restaurants in Halifax.
We enjoyed the most fantastic hand crafted cocktails last night made by Katy. Then ice cold oysters with fresh shaved horseradish. And a delicious dinner after that. The Black Sheep is thumbs up!
Amazing experiences! The food is creative and delicious. We had shrimp ceviche, seafood chowder, lobster ravioli and Roulade...and Roulade is a show stopper, creative and well constructed dessert. The only throw back is the hanging artificial pothos. It does not fit with the quality of the space.
